Highly Skilled Immigrants to UK Doubled in 2008

The UK still needs highly skilled people from India. Despite the economic slowdown and a new and more rigorous points-based immigration system, the number of highly skilled immigratrants to the UK from India doubled in 2008 as compared to 2007.

Tier 1 of the points-based system (PBS)-Which is for highly skilled individuals who contribute to growth and productivity-saw its first global launch in India in April 2008.Applicants under this do not need to have a specific job offer in the UK but will need to demonstrate that they are highly skilled, have money to support themselves and are able to speak English. Indians were the largest number of applicants under the earlier High Skilled Migrant Programme (HMPS) which has been replaced by Tier 1 and there were apprehensions that there would be a sharp drop in numbers with the introduction of the PBS.However, the number of visas issued under tier 1 in India between the launch in April 2008 and December 2008 is 3000.

“That makes the number of highly skilled immigrants from India 25% more is just nine months of 2008 than the whole of 2007 when we had issued 2400 HSMP visas. The total number of HSMP tier 1 visas for 2008 stands at 4800 which is double than 2007.” Says Mr.Chirs Dix, Regional director south Asia and Gulf of the UK Border Agency’s international group.

In fact, he is very upbeat about the roll-out Tier 1 in India and feels that’s its category is doing exactly the job that the UK Government had hoped it would do.” The most system is more rigorous and Tier 1 looks at the quality and ability of individuals who are planning to immigrate to the UK and though we are ourselves somewhat surprised at the surge in grants from India, We also feel that the UK will now need more talented and motivated individuals to help us recover from the economic slowdown”Mr.Dix adds.

A new category in Tier 1 that would make UK more attractive is students with a degree from UK institutions for post-study work up to two years. The profile of applicants in India for tier 1 visas has not changed much from the HSMP applicatants, and typically includes people working in banking finance, IT and management consultancy.
