Latest Visa Rules - Other Countries

Latest Visa Rules - Canada, UK, Scotland, Australia and Singapore:

CANADA

Canada which is becoming a very hot destination for students from India has recently allowed off-campus work permits for international full-time students. Under a series of new federal-provincial agreements, various provinces now allow foreign students to find work outside campus. Earlier, such students were restricted to working only on campus. Even better is a rule which allows them work in their field of study outside Montreal, Toronto, or Vancouver, for up to two years after graduation. The off campus work agreements will enable international students to acquire work experience in Canada.

NEW IMMIGRATION RULES ALLOWING POST GRADUATES TO WORK IN THE UK:

The Home Office has introduced new immigration provisions which will allow all UK recognized Master’s degree and PhD graduates, starting their courses on or after 1 May 2006, to apply for leave to remain in the UK to work for 12 months. The scheme is an extension of the current Science and Engineering Graduate Scheme which has, until now, only been available to Science and Engineering Graduates. Under the new rules postgraduates of all subjects will be able to apply for the scheme.

In the Pre-Budget Report in December 2005, the Chancellor made the following announcement:

“Ensuring the UK remains one of the most attractive places for students to study abroad requires concerted action from both the sector and government…To help the sector seize the benefits of globalization the Government will [amongst other things]…allow all international students on completion of a postgraduate degree…to work in the UK for up to 12 months”.

The International Office welcomes the news and recognizes the opportunities this will offer the University's international postgraduates. Gaining work experience in the UK is extremely important for international students. It not only gives them the opportunity to build on and develop their skills in an international workplace, it also gives them invaluable experience with which they can pursue their chosen career in an extremely competitive marketplace.

SCOTLAND

Indian students planning to study in Scotland will find the Scotland Fresh Talent scheme attractive. It allows all overseas students graduating from a Scottish University to stay on and work in Scotland for an additional two years. Scotland is trying to attract talented people and retain them and this scheme is a part of that plan. The scheme covers all undergrad and post-grad students in Scotland and enables them to apply for working visa upon officially finishing their courses. Fresh Talent also covers entrepreneurs seeking to relocate an existing business to Scotland.

An interesting feature of the Fresh Talent scheme is that while only those students who express the desire to work in Scotland will be given working visas, they cannot be officially prevented from relocating anywhere else in the UK in search of employment.

SINGAPORE

Singapore Government is offering the EPEC visa to students across the globe from certain recognized institutes. The visa is an invitation to deserving students and allows them to come to Singapore and explore employment opportunities. This is valid for 6 months, which is ample time for them to secure a good job, and then hiring company sponsors their employment visa.

AUSTRALIA

The Australian Government has recently overhauled skilled visa sub classes to the advantage of Indians. With a growing demand for skilled migrants within the country and with competition from other countries in attracting them, the Australian government has made big changes to its temporary and permanent visa categories. Earlier, there were many sub-classes to fill the demand and supply gap in certain target industries over the years. Now, to increase the inflow of skilled migrants and to make the programme more attractive to the Australian employers and overseas applicants, the government has come up with many changes in the sub-classes. The new law has made it easier for qualified applicants to obtain provisional visas which could lead to eligibility for permanent residence in Australia.
